Class Descriptions

Additional classes are often offered. Please refer to the current class schedule and/or registration form for class descriptions, class enrollment limits and class prerequisites.

Class enrollment is limited to ensure you and your dog have a successful training session. Register early to ensure your spot in the class. (Here’s the Schedule and Enrollment form)

Pet Classes

These classes are to help handlers acquire the skills to train their dogs to be well behaved pets and companions.

  • Puppy
    For puppies 9 weeks through 6 months. Instructional lectures are included. If divided, Puppy 1 is for younger puppies, Puppy 2 is for older puppies.

  • Beginning
    For dogs 5-6 months and older who have never had obedience training or who need a refresher course or want something fun to do.

  • Advanced Beginning
    For dogs that have successfully completed Beginning class, this class concentrates on fun, motivation, communication, increasing basic skills and provides students and their dogs an opportunity to earn the American Kennel Club’s Canine Good Citizen (CGC) award.

  • Beginning /Advanced Clicker
    Employs all positive methods with an emphasis on marking correct behaviors with the clicker (provided) and/or voice marker. The main goal is to either teach (Beginning) or refine (Advanced) the fun, effective clicker training method that encourages a “thinking” dog that loves to learn.

    6-8 max

Competitive Obedience Classes

These classes are designed to teach the handler and dog the skills necessary to enter the obedience show ring.

  • Advanced Heeling
    We will work advanced heeling maneuvers to proof dogs understanding of heel position, striving for true teamwork!

  • Competition Games Class
    A class that teaches, proofs, builds drive and guarantees fun training for you and your canine companion. Learn games that revolve around all the OB exercises including stand stays and group stays. For all levels.

  • Novice Skills
    Teaches the fundamental skills for beginning competition obedience dogs. Beginning Novice Skills has an emphasis on attention, position, and  relationship building. Advanced Novice Skills teaches turns, change of pace,  stationary exercises, and beginning retrieve work. Novice Ring Ready puts all the skills together to get you and your dog in the ring to earn your AKC or UKC CD title. Dogs at different levels will be common in this series of classes.

  • Open Skills
    Basic skill requirements are a retrieve and the dog must be able to work off leash. Beginning Open Skills will start teaching the very basic skills for all of the Open class exercises. Advanced Open Skills will start putting all the parts together and Open Ring Ready will get you and your dog ready to go in the ring to earn your AKC or UKC CDX title.

  • Rally
    Rally Is a newer obedience sport, where the dog and handler maneuver through a course of stations (signs) in numerical order. Each sign indicates a specific behavioral skill. This class will teach you and your dog how to successfully navigate a course. Rally has 3 levels (Novice, Advanced, and Excellent) and students at different levels may be in the same class. Rally competition is offered by several registries including: AKC, UKC, ASCA, CKC.

  • Utility Skills
    This class offers the training for the third level of competition obedience. Your dog must have a retrieve and be able to work reliably off leash. Beginning Utility breaks down all the little skills necessary for teaching the Utility class exercises. Advanced Utility starts putting the pieces together. Ring Ready Utility starts the proofing process to make sure you and your dog have a successful time in the Utility ring.

  • UDX
    This class is for dogs that have earned both their CDX and UD titles and wish to continue competing for the UDX, Obedience Master levels or an Obedience Trial Championship. Any exercise from Open and Utility can be proofed or problem solved. This class has the students act as rotating instructors, so be prepared to teach at least one week of the session.
